I almost drown when I was 8 years old. In five feet of water, a pool surrounded by family and friends during a July 4th outing. I went down for the final time when a lady named Mrs. Cunningham jumped in and saved my life.
That was 30 years ago but I still remember every horrifying second of it. And that’s all it would have taken….seconds. I ‘d be dead.
That’s why I almost get mad when reporting the string of drownings involving young children lately. Parents and guardians don’t just have to be in the area, they need to watch a child in the pool at all times. Even if there’s a lifeguard on duty you need to pay attention. Even if you think your child is a strong swimmer…..pay attention! Even if you think you are paying attention….pay better attention.
I was in a shallow pool just inches away from the side. I wouldn’t have made it if that woman wasn’t paying attention.
Before you laugh at this rant, think of the consquences of not paying attention.
