A partial settlement has been reached with 14 defendants in a suit regarding the Sofa Super Store fire that cost nine city firemen their lives.
Three of the deceased firefighters are represented in this settlement, 18 other litigants are still seeking satisfaction.
The fire, in June of 2007, killed nine firemen and eventually resulted in the resignation of Chief Rusty Thomas and the revamping of the department and its procedures. This action targets, among others, furniture manufacturers, construction companies and the store owner.
The court has ordered a confidentiality agreement on the amount of the settlement at this time. Another mediation is expected in 60 days and some defendants may choose not to settle but instead, go to trial.
