Work on a memorial for nine Charleston firefighters killed in a furniture store blaze could begin by the two-year anniversary of the inferno.
The chairman of a 26-member city commission making recommendations on the memorial site wants plans sent to the mayor and city council by mid-March. Jimmy Bailey says the first phase of
construction could begin by the June 18 anniversary if the city quickly approves the recommendations.
The commission began meeting last year to look at proposals to honor those who died fighting the Sofa Super Store fire in 2007.
The proposed centerpiece is a memorial garden with an eternal flame, which could be surrounded by buildings used for training, a dispatch center and a room with artifacts from the blaze.
