Today marks a tragic anniversary for the Lowcountry. Nine city of Charleston heroes lost their lives two years ago June 18th battling a massive fire at the Sofa Super Store in West Ashley.

Charleston Names Thomas Carr New Fire chief
City of Charleston, S.C. Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr. announced today the selection of a new Chief of the City of Charleston Fire Department. He is Thomas W. Carr, Jr., currently serving as Fire Chief of the Montgomery County (MD) Fire and Rescue Service. He will replace Ronald Classen, who has served as Charleston’s Interim Chief since June 27, when 16-year veteran Chief Russell B. Thomas retired.

Seven Charleston Fire Chief Candidates Named
From City of Charleston News Release: Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr. announced today the names of seven candidates for the position of Fire Chief of the City of Charleston who will visit the city as part of the selection process. The candidates were narrowed down from 141 applicants. Part of their visit will include an orientation and tour of the city and its neighborhoods.

Memorial Service
On Wednesday, June 18, there will be a Memorial Service at the Gaillard Auditorium at 10:00 AM to honor and remember the firefighters. The service will last approximately one hour. Seating will be limited in the auditorium and family and firefighters will be seated first. VIDEO: The full memorial service video will be online at 12:15pm (est).
