Day 13….The End is Near!
Posted on 07/02 at 10:25 AM.

It’s a morning to sleep in, as we are winding down our tour. Awaiting us on this Wednesday is a trip to learn more about the Alaskan Indians, with live interaction and demonstrations. That is yet to come this morning. First, I want to reflect back to yesterday, and enjoy once again our spectacular experience on Prince William Sound in Southern Alaska. First, the weather. We left Anchorage with sunny skies and pleasant temperatures. We had been warned many times to expect drastic weather changes when we went through the tunnel to Whittier on the coast. There is a 2 1/2 mile tunnel through a mountain between Anchorage and Prince William Sound. It’s a rail tunnel, but they allow buses and trucks (one at a time….one way at a time) to travel through. The question always is….“What’s the weather on the other side of the tunnel?“ It’s usually a lot colder, and cloudier closer to the sound. When we left our sunshine and warmth on the Anchorage side, we expected a completely different scene on the other side. Much to our delight (in fact, I think there was a big cheer on the bus) the sun was shining in Whittier, and it was warm as well. Now it was time to board our boat for our 26 glacier tour of Prince William Sound. Even the crew on the ship was surprised about the weather…not that they were complaing, they told us!!! The 5 hour ride on the sound did not dissapoint. We saw it all!!! We saw the beautiful glaciers, we saw sea otters traveling together, and the most important and exciting sight…a Humpback Whale. It has the entire boat buzzing as we stopped and anxiuosly awaited its every trip to the top of the water. Unfortunately, I did not get a good picture of that taking place, but many in our group did. It was quite a sight to see! The glaciers were unbelievable as well, and with better than normal visibility, gave us some great pictures to take home. In this case, though, like many others, the pictures do not justice. You have to see it in person to believe it. It was breathtaking. Oh well, it’s very early here, time to get in a workout at the hotel gym (yes, reality check…and that means I ate WAY too much on this trip) and then off to our next Alaskan wonder to see!
