WELCOME!
Thanks for stopping by The Franko Blog!We will talk about everything from the news of the day, to random thoughts. This is not a one-way conversation…I invite you to give me your thoughts on things I blog about, and things I don’t. No topic is off limits!
BTW…disagreement is part of the game. But, please keep it clean. This is an all ages show!
100-0 coach speaks out
Posted on 04/14 at 06:54 PM.
Here I sit…on vacation…trying to relax and get away from the stress of my job.
But…
I’m watching ESPN and up pops an interview with Micah Grimes. He was the coach of a high school girls basketball team in Texas. The school fired him after his team won a game in January 100-0.
On the surface you think…whoa…a little bit of running up the score. Fine, but you really need to hear what this guy has to say.
Look…it stinks…I get it.
But, what is he supposed to do? Tell his girls not to score? Don’t play your hardest? Don’t do your best?
Pretty much let’s take it easy on them, because they’re not very good.
I say HOGWASH!
If he indeed pulled as many starters as he could, and stopped pressing and shooting three pointers, the guy did nothing wrong. And neither did his girls for that matter.
Perhaps someone at the league level should be fired for allowing a team so obviously outmatched on the same court..I would argue he is just as responsible.
This “outcry” is more of the coddling of kids and not allowing them to experience disappointment and loss. I coach high school sports, and have for many years…they should give their kids more credit…they’re pretty tough.
These people who ran Grimes out of town, seem to think that kids’ egos are so fragile that they can’t handle losing…that “everybody needs to be a winner”.
Some are pushing for the elimination of all-star games, and championships…some even going as far as calling for scores to no longer be kept in little league sports.
Sorry…but that’s not how life works. There are winners, and there are losers. Children are better served learning to deal with that adversity, than having adults deal with it for them.
