WELCOME!
Thanks for stopping by The Franko Blog!
We will talk about everything from the news of the day, to random thoughts.  This is not a one-way conversation…I invite you to give me your thoughts on things I blog about, and things I don’t.  No topic is off limits!

BTW…disagreement is part of the game. But, please keep it clean. This is an all ages show!

D-Day for DTV is is here
Posted on 06/12 at 11:00 AM.

Today is the day.

At 11:30 tonight, News 2 will make the switch to Digital TV.

Hopefully by now you have everything you need, but if you’re still having problems, we are here to help!!

Let me know what issues you have, so you don’t lose your signal.

You can get some of the basics by watching the video…you can also get step-by-step directions to setting up your converter box in our Digital Switch section.

There is also a new service, set up by the FCC…they will send someone to your home to set up your boxes and help you get your antenna adjusted.  Call: 888-508-1115

Hey Henry!  As long as you have a loop antenna it should work just fine.  I have a little $12 antenna and it works perfectly.  I do have to adjust it a bit to get fox, but other work fine.  A couple of months ago we did have an issue with one of our amps, but that has been fixed.  I would get another antenna and if that doesn’t work…take it back.  If you still have trouble let me know…we will figure it out!

JoAnne,  your battery powered tv is going to be no good unless it has some sort of an external antenna jack on it.  If there is, you will be able to hook up a converter box, but the converter boxes require A/C power so if the power goes out, you’re out of luck.  It’s my understanding that they are selling battery tvs with the digital tuners.

sorry for the bummer news.

I tried existing indoor antenna and an amplified indoor antenna that I bought.  I received picture but it would break up frequently and got message signal not strong enough, need different antenna. It was my understanding that the converter box should work with existing rabbit ears if I was receiving a good analog picture already. Is channel 2 broadcasting with a full digital signal now? Will I have to renew my library card and forget television after Feb. 17th. unless I spring for an outdoor antenna?

What about the portable TV’s that run on AC, batteries or can be plugged into cigarette lighter?  How will they work after the switch to digital or will they?

Thanks, Brad.

Hey Vivian, I forwarded your issue on to our engineering department. I will let you know what they say as soon as possible.

I’m also having a problem with 2.1.
I get the message “signal can not be decoded”.  I get 4.1, 5.2, 7.2, 7.3, 24.1 clearly across comcast (basic digital) on a sony tv with a qam tuner.  I used to get 2.1 but am not sure when it changed.

Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Last Christmas I bought a new Westinghouse HDTV that even had a (.) on the remote so I could get the HD stations over the air. I was able to get the 2.1 channel (as well as the competitors (5.1; 7.2 4.1, 23.1 etc). Since aprox Aug or so ( i don’t know when because I usually still watched normay channels) I just get a black scren and the TV says no signal. I get all the local HD feeds except 2.1. Did you change a signal stregnth or anything?

Bob, I hope other people will make sure that the older people who they know are set…they’re the ones I’m concerned about.

I’m with you on the Y2K similarity Chris!  Problem is, the people who are going to have a problem probably won’t realize it until they don’t have a signal anymore.  I talked to someone the other day who called it “another scam”.  I’m worried that people will run out and buy brand new TVs for no reason.

Dee, your situation is a bit of a puzzle.  Is Knology hooked up to the tv that worked too?  Knology doesn’t pick up our digital signal yet, but they will when the actual switch is made in February.

Hey BC, no…we won’t be HD for a while yet.  HDTV is just a form of DTV.

I’m set and good to go with my television. The trick is getting my mom and dad ready for the switch. When i was a little tyke, dad would pull the old tubes out of the back of the television, we would drive it to the local Seven Eleven convenience store and test it in the machine to see if it worked. If not, we went and bought a new one. This was in the day (if you can believe it) before remote controls!! Yes, there was such a day and get this, the television we had was ....wait for it…...black and white!! BTW, I would someone end up riding home with an Icee from the Seven Eleven. Cola or Cherry were my favorite flavors….ahhh….to be a child again!

It felt like a mini Y2K all over again and that somehow we would have to go apply for new social security cards or something. The unabashed cynic in me says wait and see what the cable companies do with this little tidbit.
It is one of the problems with being old and remembering it was just the cost of the TV which included a sound source. If you didn’t like what was available on any of the 3 channels, you went outside and played or read a book.

i have knology due to living in an apartment complex who has contract with knology.  i have one tv that has tv/vcr/dvd in one.  last night it said i don’t have dvt.  is there any specific reason?  my other tv which is old appeared to pass the other test.

i was under the impression that all cable tv’s would work under this new transition.

thank you for your assistance.

Brad,  I’ve been digital for some time.  Some may have thought it was a Halloween trick.  So does that mean you counton2 is now in full HD?  Happy Halloween.
