Charleston Mayor Joe Riley is pointing the finger at Sofa Super Store owner Herb Goldstein for the June 18th tragedy.

In an interview published in Saturday’s Post and Courier, Riley said Goldstein is to blame, and the Charleston Fire Department and the City did everything possible to prevent the tragedy.

Goldstein’s attorney said the city’s fire and code inspectors had the opportunity to point out violations, and his client would have addressed them.

Phase II of the city commissioned Post Incident Assessment and Enhancement Team’s report pointed to to the Sofa Super Store, and failures, and mistakes by the Charleston Fire Department for the events of that night.

COMMENTS

Hopefully people will look long and hard at Riley when the next election comes around. With that being said, the CFD preplanned the Sofa Super Store 2 weeks prior to the fire. Every firefighter knows that a furniture store has a heavy, heavy fire load. I used to tell Louis M. all the time that not having a 5 inch hose was going to catch up with the CFD, he would always say “that’s how Chief Rusty likes it done.” Now, if a female engineer for the FD knows better, certainly the fire chief should!!??? Rusty has the blood of 9 on his hands!

Mr Franko,
I have lived in Charleston for 7 yrs now but this fire tragedy takes the cake.  I can understand Thomas leaving, but Riley should be impeached.  If he has the final decisions on all thing involving the fire, police and any safety dept. (trumping his council) he should go too. No one man should have that much power. ( Look what happened when they gave it to Bush) I also thing the store owner should do jail time. But no they let him open another raggedy store down the street.  I have lived in many large cities but never one so backwards as this one.  I think I have said enough except Yea Buckeyes!
