WELCOME!
Thanks for stopping by The Franko Blog!
We will talk about everything from the news of the day, to random thoughts.  This is not a one-way conversation…I invite you to give me your thoughts on things I blog about, and things I don’t.  No topic is off limits!

BTW…disagreement is part of the game. But, please keep it clean. This is an all ages show!

Ode to America

I came across this email a couple of weeks ago and I saved it for today. It’s an Ode to America written in a Romanian newspaper.

An Ode to America~

Why are Americans so united? They would not resemble one another even if you painted them all one color! They speak all the languages of the
world and form an astonishing mixture of civilizations and religious beliefs.
Still, the American tragedy turned three hundred million people into a hand put on the heart.
Nobody rushed to accuse the White House, the Army, or the Secret Service that they are only a bunch of losers.
Nobody rushed to empty their bank accounts.
Nobody rushed out onto the streets nearby to gape about.
Instead the Americans volunteered to donate blood and to give a helping hand.

After the first moments of panic, they raised their flag over the smoking ruins, putting on T-shirts, caps and ties in the colors of the national flag.
They placed flags on buildings and cars as if in every place and on every car a government official or the president was passing. On every
occasion, they started singing:’God Bless America!’

I watched the live broadcast and rerun after rerun for hours listening to the story of the guy who went down one hundred floors with a woman in a wheelchair without knowing who she was, or of the Californian hockey player, who gave his life fighting with the terrorists and prevented the plane from hitting a target that could have killed other hundreds or thousands of people.

How on earth were they able to respond united as one human being? Imperceptibly, with every word and musical note, the memory of some turned into a modern myth of tragic heroes. And with every phone call, millions and millions of dollars were put into a collection aimed at rewarding not a man or a family, but a spirit, which no money can buy.

What on earth can unite the Americans in such a way? Their land? Their history? Their economic Power? Money?
I tried for hours to find an answer, humming songs and murmuring phrases with the risk of sounding commonplace,
I thought things over, I reached but only one conclusion… Only freedom can work such miracles.

Find a veteran today...shake their hand and say “thank you”. After-all...they are the reason for our celebration today.

COMMENTS

I have found patriotic naturalized citizens to be the norm where ever I have been blessed to live in this country. We as American citizens take this country for granted; even the ability to complain about it once in a while. Sadly, only one US Flag flew yesterday in my entire neighborhood.

I am reminded on this 4th of July of a young lady that just arrived in the US from Poland. I hired her as my assistant and within a short 4 years she got her degree from Villanova University and more than tripled her income. When asked, she said that she would never become a citizen. Recently,I spoke with her and she invited me to attend 3 celebrations given for her...her birthday, her college graduation, and her US citizenship. I reminded her of her earlier statement and asked why the change of heart.

She replied “ I love America for its opportunity and its freedom to be whatever you want. God Bless America”.

I received the following from one of Military Reunion guys. This is an abbreviated form.
LOVING AMERICA

When in England at a fairly large conference, Colin Powell was asked by The Archbishop of Canterbury if our plans for Iraq were just an example of ‘empire building’ by George Bush.
He answered by saying, “Over the years, the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for in return was enough to bury those that did not return.”
You could have heard a pin drop.

A U.S. Navy Admiral was attending a naval conference that included Admirals from the U.S. , English, Canadian, Australian and French Navies. At a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with a large group of Officers that included personnel from most of those Countries.
Everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks but a French admiral suddenly complained that, “whereas Europeans learn many Languages, Americans learn only English.” He then asked, “Why is it that we always have to speak English in these conferences rather than
Speaking French?” Without hesitating, the American Admiral replied, “Maybe it’s because the Brits, Canadians, Aussies and Americans arranged it so you wouldn’t have to speak German.”
You could have heard a pin drop.
