Earthquake in Summerville, SC
Posted on 12/16 at 08:01 AM.

The calls started coming in at 7:45 this morning, and they lasted until about 9.

The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed that it was a 3.6 magnitude quake that shook Summerville at 7:42 a.m.

Experts want to know what you felt, you can tell them what you felt on their DYFI section.

I have posted the interview with College of Charleston professor Steven Jaumes, he had some interesting things to say about the quake.  Including the misconception that we live on a “fault line”...turns out it’s for of a fault zone.  He explains it better than I can, so check it out.

Here are some of the emails coming in from our website from viewers who experienced it:

We live in Summerville near Alston Middle School and felt the EARTHQUAKE rumbling under our house as many people did. But what was so interesting that we have not heard the telephone callers mention was what direction did they feel the earthquake come in from. Our house faces east and we felt and heard the quake come up under our house from the west and felt and heard the quake and shocks continue on east. Our house is brick on concrete slab and the whole house SHOOK and lasted for several seconds. Again, we thought that it was interesting that we could actually feel the direction that the quake came in from.

The earthquacke that was a little over 4 points that happened in the 1990’s moved in the same pattern. We have felt two earthquakes and one tremor while living in our home for 20 years. I wanted to share this information because we have not heard the weather commentator nor the viewers mention or discuss in what direction have other people felt how the quake moved.

It would be appreciated if the weather people and experts could discuss this topic. Barbara

In the area of Summerville I live, it didn’t sound like an earthquake to me. It was more like an explosion. A loud boom with momentary shaking. I thought for a moment a tree had fell on my house, earthquake was the last thing on my mind. Heather

I live in Westcott Plantation in the Orchards (townhouses) and about 10 minutes ago (Tuesday morning 12-16-08, 7:40 am) it felt as if my house was hit by a tractor trailor.  The entire house shook.  I dont know who to contact and I was wondering if it could have been an earthquake?  I never experienced anything like it. Brad,  I saw the report concerning the Triangle of Safety e-mail that has been circulating, and thought that someone might want to look this up in Snopes.  I read it a while ago, and remembered that it some what debunked the theory.  The link is http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/household/triangle.asp if you would like to check it out.

Thanks.

Hey Brad, you mention posting an interview with the college professor, but I don’t see a link to it… could you point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

I live in Summerville off Trolley Rd, had just woken up and turned on the TV as I laid in bed when I heard 3 loud booms and felt the house shake. I went outside where I saw my neighbor walking in his yard. He said both he and his daughter felt it as well. He thought it was either an earthquake or a plane crash. It honestly felt like a huge truck hit the house. What is strange is that when you talk to people who were outside at the time, they say they didn’t feel or hear anything. Could those of us that were in our houses or buildings, apartments and such that heard the booms actually have heard the buildings being picked up and dropped. One person I heard of who was in their yard didn’t hear anything while a person in their house did. Someone explain this?????

Art, I am also wondering about the loud noise that preceded the quake - a lot of people said they didn’t hear a noise, but where we were (on 78, closed to Bacon’s Bridge) is was very audible - sounding like something crashing into the house or an explosion. A bit frightening, but fascinating nonetheless!

Rick, that sounds like the exact same thing.  they hear them up in north carolina too.  i just googled seneca guns theory and it talked about the American Indian folklore too.

Posted by Brad Franko on 12/16 at 01:36 PM

hey art, when the video is ready, watch it…the prof from cofc says that there is no sound from the quake, the sound is from things on the ground that move.

Posted by Brad Franko on 12/16 at 01:19 PM

Does anyone know what causes the noise that sounds like a loud explosion during an earthquake?

Posted by Art Shields on 12/16 at 01:18 PM

Hello Brad,
I was intrested when you mentioned the Seneca Guns.
Was this in reference to the Noises heard on Seneca Lake in upstate NY? I was born in that region and we called it the Seneca Drums. You would be sitting on the lakeshore in the summer time and hear a beating sound coming from down the lake. The folklore was that the Indian ghost were beating drums. In fact there were gas pockets under the lake that would rush to the surface and thus ,the noise (Quite loud sometimes).
Also note that there are parts of the lake that the bottom has not been found. Just some useless information.

Interesting to note that your expert says no “boom” is to be expected such as folks heard. In the early 90’s there was a similar jolt in Summerville in the mid-morning hours. That one woke me with a loud boom and then shaking - at the time I was living off Ashley Phosphate near Dorchester Road. Much closer to Summerville now and we didn’t hear the “boom” on this am’s shake like others did, but in spite of the expert opinion - I certainly heard one back then and don’t doubt it happened!

We were sitting on the couch watching the morning news and all of the sudden, there was a loud boom and shaking. We thought somebody plowed their vehicle into the apartment below us. When we looked out the window, there was nothing there. Then, we realized it was an earthquake.

I also live in Legend Oaks, which is located at the epicenter, and the shaking was enough to wake me and my 13 month old son. It also made my African Grey Parrot fall off his perch!!!

We felt it here at work off Jedburg Road in Summerville.  One of the guys upstairs came down and said it felt like they were swaying back and forth.  We felt it in the thick concrete floor.  I called my husband at home in Sangaree and they felt it there too.  This is the second time since we moved here 4 years ago that this has happened.  I hope it is not a sign of worse to come.  I know Summerville is on a faultline.

My whole house shook, I heard the roof cracking/creaking.  The big mirrow on my dresser was shaking.  I knew immediately it was an earthquake even though this is the first one I have ever experienced.  It really freaked me out!!!

We felt what everybody else felt and the quake shook the house big time, but we also felt the direction that it came in from. We could feel the rumble and boom coming from under the house. Ouur house faces east and we could feel and hear the quake moving from the west to the east. This was the same pattern and direction that the quake in the 1990’s was felt in our home. Very scary! The Summerville police dept. said it was a tremor, it was more than a tremor which made it very scary.

Something else that happened that was very unusual for this time of the year. We saw a very large snake and several smaler ones within the same week the day after Thanksgiviing lying on the ground at a historical site here in Summerville which is very odd for this time of the year. We have seen the world news broadcasting how animals react before an event occurs.

When we had our dogs during the 1990’s earthquake here in Smmerville the dogs acted very unusual prior to this quake.  Any and all information will be appreciated.

Thank You very much for keeping us well informed!

We live off 17A between Moncks Corner, Goose Creek and Summerville.  About 7:45 loud rumbling and it was like a rippeling shaking.  It shook the entire house, windows and terrified me and the dogs.  Never been through this before.  It lasted about 3-5 seconds at most.

I don’t know Aurora…people felt it all the way to the coast.  That’s a good question though, i will let you know.

I felt a terrible rumble so bad that it rattled the entire house on Sunday Night, Dec. 14th at approximately 11:30 PM.  My sister lives just around the corner and they felt it also.  My mother lives next door to me and it was so fierce she said she went outside the house to see if her foundation had dropped on her house.

Posted by Rachel Howell on 12/16 at 10:54 AM

Good question Aurora…I will ask the prof that too.

BTW…i will be doing a live chat during the Midday show at 11am if you’re interested.

Posted by Brad Franko on 12/16 at 10:52 AM

Hey Angela, I am going to ask a professor from the College of Charleston about that when he comes in for News 2 Midday at 11am.  I will let you know.

Posted by Brad Franko on 12/16 at 10:50 AM

Has there been any info about the “earthquake” on james island around 1230 on Sunday Dec 14th?  More then a few people have told me that we did have an earthquake on Sunday too.

Posted by angela on 12/16 at 10:40 AM

What I felt lasted about a second at the most. I heard one person say ten seconds. That would have felt like an eternity. The house did vibrate with a boom! My dogs started to bark. I felt one in the 70’s that lasted longer. I just hope that was it. There is a fault line running down highway 61.

Posted by John Buelman III on 12/16 at 10:39 AM

The house felt like it was moving. Very loud noise. I ran down the hall while the floor was moving to get out the door. An incredible experience! Now I hear you are supposed to climb under a table.

WOW!  First experience of this type of “motion” - I felt a jolt around 7:42 this morning and immediately jumped out of bed.  It was different than a jolt that kind of moves instantly… this was more like a sid-to-side sway back and forth that moves slower.  VERY DIFFERENT for SC, yet SO overdue for this type of thing.

Posted by Kary on 12/16 at 10:31 AM

I live in the Sangaree area and heard a roar sort of like a large airplane and then the house started shaking for several seconds.  It shook so hard it gave me a headache.  I knew it had to be an earthquake because of how severe the shaking was.  I actually thought there would be cracks in the walls in my house, but I have not seen any.

@BradFranko thanks for explaining. Whether we agree or not with the reason, it's nice to understand why the decision was made.

@BradFranko Exactly my point: Why so long for higher authorities to challenge "Good ol' boy network" in CHS?

@BradFranko Dontchathink nearly 3 years is a little late for that? That investigation should've started immediately. #SLEDFail
