Shortly after we aired the story about Rodell Vereen getting three years in prison for having sex with a horse (for the second time) in Horry County, emails from parents started coming in.
Several remarked that there could have been a better way for us to word that story so kids getting ready for school wouldn’t be subjected to that.
My initial answer is, absolutely.
I used the phrase, “had relations’. I think that gets the point across, without spelling it out to kids.
But that also gets into the slippery slope of censorship in the media. If we censor that, what else to censor?
I think we can take some notes from Disney, Pixar, and all of those cartoon movie makers. They lob adult jokes embedded in kids movies all the time…the parents get it, and the kids are oblivious. We can do the same thing, telling a story that is as off-the-charts weird as that one.
Thankfully, we don’t have to report on buggery enough to worry about this coming up again!
