How young is too young to learn how to swim?

That question came up this morning and generated some buzz among the News 2 Today team.

I have a hard time watching the video...it’s legitimacy is questioned by the American Academy of Pediatrics .

Others swear by the practice of dunking infants and letting them teach themselves to float on their back.

What do you think?

I think nothing!

Caren, I think that is one of the fears...it makes children fearless, when it comes to water. But, you also make a good point in that they’re prepared if something should happen. I, like Cheryl, find it too hard to watch.

I am not sure about the tactic they use, but I don’t believe a baby is too young to learn how to swim.  There are too many children that die each year from drownings, and the vast majority of those children did not know how to swim.  My 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 year old nephews were both exposed to the water and attended swim lessons at an early age.  And, you would think they both have gills under their swimsuits!  The 3 1/2 year old will run and jump (and I do mean jump) into the water without any fear (they both of course are wearing swimsuits with flotation devices built into them)!  Meanwhile, my 40 year old best friend has been trying to learn how to swim for the past 15 years, and is unable and terrified of the water!

Wow, I don’t know what to say. All the parents seem calm while their baby is floundering under water- that is hard for me watch.

I have a 1 year old and 2 year old and would like to sign them up for swim lessons. Honestly I don’t think I could sit there and watch as my child struggled to roll over under the water knowing full well they are inhaling water. I would think this would make them fearful of getting into the pool.

It appears to be a wonderful technique, but I don’t think I could do that to my child
