I get a lot of cool emails from time to time but today I got a real nice one from John. He brings up a good point about the evolution of football….here’s what he had to say:
“In 1933, Vince Lombardi accepted a football scholarship to Fordham University which is the Jesuit college in the Bronx, New York. Lombardi was an undersized offensive guard at 5’8” and 185 lbs.
This year the top ranked offensive guard in the NFL college draft was George “Duke” Robinson at 6’5” and 329 lbs. who plays for the Carolina Panthers and the top overall NFL offensive guard is Steve Hutchinson who is 6’5” and 313 lbs. who plays for the Minnesota Vikings.“
I actually did a story about this back in October. You can always make exceptions to the rule but there’s no denying today’s playings are bigger, stronger, and faster than ever before.
Now if that means they are better, well that’s not entirely easy thing to decipher.
