My review of “Dear John”
Posted on 02/08 at 08:58 AM.

I went to see “Dear John” opening night last Friday. Overall, I was pleased. It was so awesome to see Folly Beach, Bowen’s Island, the CofC campus and the alleyway of Coast Restaurant all in the film. Everybody in the audience let out a soft cheer when Channing Tatum’s character writes to his love that he “misses Charleston.“

As if the world doesn’t already know how awesome Charleston is, even more will be flocking here!

As for my review, I thought the movie was well-done, well-shot and well-told. I did expect a little more, but after “The Notebook”...it’s hard to live up to that kind of romance in a film. At first, I was disappointed about the ending, but really…there’s no other way to end it. The emotional ups and downs weren’t quite as extreme as “The Notebook,“ but I’d give it 3.5-4 out of five stars. Great location and duh…Channing Tatum!

COMMENTS

yes, it’s always tough following a book and making the movie match.  I’m glad I never read the notebook…although I can’t imagine the book being much better.  I love that movie.

My favorite book is “The Time Traveler’s Wife” and I knew that it was not going to make a good movie though I saw it anyway.  You’d need to add another hour to really capture the love story and do it justice.  But “Dear John” was enjoyable…not award-worthy. But I did like it.

I personally did not enjoy Dear John after reading the book. There are so many things that are not like the book which was disappointing in my opinion. The same thing happened with Twilight…. Maybe I should stop reading books before the movie comes out!

I did enjoy the fact that I recognized Isle of Palms (that was where he was surfing and when they shot down the beaches!) and the CofC campus. More movies should be made here because we have history and the talent for extras. Many kudos to Hollywood for coming here to shoot the movie!
